What you need to know about Zircon: Radiation, Refraction and Place of Origin (Part 2)
Is there any radiation from natural zircons?
- There is radiation from natural zircons indeed, but it is much weakerthan that from your mobile phone.
- The zircon used in ordinary middle and low leveljewelry is artificial, not natural, which is called synthetic cubic zirconia, and has no harmful radiation to human body.
- There are many colors of zircon, such as colorless, brown, yellow, red-brown, blue, red, yellow-green, etc. In 1920, heating treatment was applied to change the color of zircon, making blue zircon a new favorite of general consumers.

The most beautiful thing about zircon is its refraction.
Zircon has a high refractive rate of 0.059. So when you observe it, you’ll find obvious double shadow lines (that is, you feel your eyes are blurred and you can't focus).
Yellow zircons have bright colors, which are shiny, like yellow diamonds.

Although there are many different color classifications of zircon, colorless zircon has been the most famous for a long time. The main reason is that the high refractive rate of zircon makes the refraction and brightness of zircon look exactly like diamond.
Because of its high refraction rate, colorless zircon exhibits the bright light and scintillation very similar to diamonds, so it is the closest to diamonds among all diamond-like stones. However, zircon is not as hard as diamond, so that after wearing face-cut zircon for a period of time, it will turn blur and dim. Most colorless diamonds will be cut into round because the shape shows the best light and scintillation.

Because the specific gravity of zircon is about 4.7, which is higher than that of most gemstones, a one-carat zircon will look smaller than most gemstones.
Origin of zircon
Zircon is abundant in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia and other places. Because of its abundant production, the price of zircons in various colors and categories is not expensive. For blue zircons of general quality, the price is probably between tens and hundreds of dollars per carat.
